Two-Month GST/HST Break Starts This Saturday

Starting December 14, Canadians can enjoy two months of savings as the federal government temporarily removes the GST/HST from certain essential goods. This tax break applies to items bought and delivered by February 15, 2025, with no extra steps required from shoppers—the tax is automatically removed at checkout. Items like groceries, children’s clothing, video game consoles, and printed books are included, but some products, such as e-books and holiday decorations, are excluded.

The tax relief applies throughout the supply chain, meaning manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers also benefit. Provinces with harmonized sales taxes, like Ontario and Nova Scotia, will see the entire HST removed on qualifying purchases. The program includes a variety of everyday items, from prepared foods to non-alcoholic beverages and toys for children under 14.

This initiative is expected to cost the federal government $1.46 billion, with additional costs for HST provinces if they don’t seek compensation. It’s part of a broader effort to offer Canadians some financial relief as they face rising living expenses.
