Disney is making a strategic bet on generative AI with a billion-dollar investment in OpenAI tied to its Sora video model. Under the deal, Sora will gain licensed access to a large catalogue of Disney characters, costumes and props across more than two hundred animated and live action properties, enabling users to create short AI videos where those worlds appear under an official content agreement.
The partnership goes beyond licensing. Disney plans to become a major OpenAI enterprise customer, rolling out tools like ChatGPT and other AI assistants across its organisation to support everything from creative development and marketing to internal productivity. The company is framing the move as a way to extend its storytelling into new formats while keeping tight control over how its intellectual property is used.
For OpenAI and the wider industry, the agreement sets a new reference point for collaborations between AI platforms and large rights holders. Sora content will continue to carry AI watermarks and operate under safety systems designed to filter harmful material and protect likenesses, giving Disney a level of assurance while it experiments. If the partnership proves successful, it is likely to influence how other studios and brands approach licensing their characters into generative ecosystems.
