Apple is developing its own 5G modems to replace Qualcomm, starting with the iPhone SE 4, iPhone 17 Air, and entry-level iPads next year. These first modems will be efficient but lack mmWave support and have slower speeds than Qualcomm.
By 2026, Apple plans to upgrade its modems with mmWave for faster speeds and better performance, starting with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPad Pro. These improvements aim to rival Qualcomm and eventually surpass it.
This shift helps Apple reduce costs and control its hardware. While early modems may not match Qualcomm, Apple’s long-term goal is to lead in performance and integration.
