Amazon CEO Andy Jassy confirmed what many in tech have been anticipating: generative AI is reshaping the workforce, and Amazon’s corporate headcount will shrink as a result. In a memo sent Tuesday, Jassy said the company will need fewer employees to do jobs that AI can now handle — signaling a major shift in how Amazon will operate going forward.
Jassy encouraged staff to start embracing the tools now, pushing for “scrappier teams” and efficiency through AI. The announcement comes after multiple rounds of layoffs since 2022, with over 27,000 job cuts already, and adds to growing pressure across Big Tech as companies double down on automation to stay competitive.
Amazon has been aggressively investing in AI, using it to boost everything from warehouse robotics to demand forecasting. Jassy called AI a “once-in-a-lifetime reinvention” and said its impact is moving faster than any other tech shift in recent memory — saving money, rewriting workflows, and reshaping the company from the inside out.
