This year’s Met Gala theme and exhibition will revolve around “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” It specifically draws inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The exhibition is divided into 12 sections: Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook, Heritage, Beauty, Cool, and Cosmopolitanism. Miller explores black dandyism and its importance in shaping the black identity, resisting against racial oppression and overall self-expression through dress when black people were silenced time and time again in history.
In the 1800s, dandyism was a form of self-establishment as it allowed people to stand out for the sole reason of being precisely well groomed and dressed. But for black dandyism, it was more than just about looking good and standing out; it was about self-declaration and establishment in a white nationalist society. There is an undeniable factor about the dandyism aesthetic; the polished shoes, a crisply tailored suit, and a quality bow-tie, it automatically translates to respect and recognition. But when a group of people faced extreme prejudice and were ostracized from society, that translation was more meaningful than ever. This is why Black dandyism is such an important part of the black identity and breaking racial barriers. In a world where black people have been marginalized, the dandy was a figure of resistance and overcoming. It allowed black people to assert themselves in a world where they would often be rejected or excluded.
The black dandy was increasingly embraced during the 1920s and 1930s Harlem Renaissance, when Harlem was the capital of the movement that was dedicated to black expression, art, intellect, and culture. The dandy uniform meticulously merged European dressing with black culture, not only making this a cultural revolution but a fashion revolution as well. With their sharply tailored suits and immaculate styling, Black dandies used dress as a form of resistance, challenging the societal constraints placed on them, from the professional world to personal expression.
The black dandy was a figure that indirectly told society to screw themselves without having to say much at all, letting the clothes do the talking. Society sought to judge black people on their skin instead of their character, restricting and limiting their lives, freedoms, and paths. Black dandyism fought against that, asserting people in a world that tried to deny them, dehumanize, and undignify them. The black dandyism form of self-expression has evolved in modern times but still serves many of the same purposes as it did centuries ago. Today, it continues to celebrate individuality through sharp tailoring, but with a modern twist, embracing flamboyance, creativity, and the power of standing out rather than blending in.
This year’s theme and Met Gala 2025 dress code, “Tailored for You,” is meant to focus on impeccable tailoring, suits, and being tailored to the wearer. Since a suit is tailored to the wearer from top to bottom, every piece is customized for one individual. Expect gender-bending suits, exquisite tailoring, meticulous attention to detail, and one-of-a-kind statements that tap into the wearer’s psyche and persona. We can expect a sophisticated Met Gala night that celebrates Black culture, diversity, refined taste, and the power of fashion’s most famous icon: the suit.
The 2025 Met Gala hosts are a group of co-chairs who fully immersed themselves in the theme and exhibit. Of course, we have Anna Wintour, who has co-chaired since 1995. Hosting the Met Gala will also be actor Colman Domingo, F1 star Lewis Hamilton, rapper A$AP Rocky, and singer Pharrell Williams. Basketball legend LeBron James is stepping in as this year’s honorary chair.
The event typically hosts 450 invite-only guests. Yes... It is very exclusive, and an invitation to the event basically means you made it in the fashion world. Some notable long-time goers are fashion icon Sarah Jessica Parker, one-of-a-kind singer/artist and entrepreneur Rihanna, and the supermodel of all supermodels, Naomi Campbell. We cannot wait to see who will be in the 2025 Met Gala, and with so many eccentric and unique characters in 2025’s fashion realm, we can only expect the best for their execution of the Met Gala 2025 dress code, “Tailored for You.”
