Amazon is making a major move in North Carolina, announcing a $10 billion investment to build a new AI and data center campus in Richmond County. The project is expected to create at least 500 full-time jobs and support thousands more through construction and supply chains—bringing fresh life to a region once hit hard by the collapse of the textile industry.
The massive “innovation campus” will house data infrastructure like servers, storage drives, and networking equipment while hiring for roles in engineering, network security, and AI systems. Amazon says it’ll also work with local colleges and universities to train talent, creating a strong pipeline for high-tech jobs in the region.
Richmond County officials greenlit a 20-year incentive plan tied to job creation and investment benchmarks. Meanwhile, the infrastructure upgrades coming with the deal—including water, wastewater, and broadband expansion—won’t cost local taxpayers a cent. North Carolina Governor Josh Stein called the project “transformative,” and Amazon says it’s just getting started in shaping the state’s future as a tech hub.
