Trump Grants Another TikTok Extension, Avoids Immediate Ban Amid Sale Uncertainty

President Donald Trump will once again delay the ban on TikTok, extending the deadline for ByteDance to sell its U.S. operations to a domestic buyer. The new 90-day extension, announced Tuesday, gives the Chinese-owned app more time to comply with a 2024 law that demands divestiture over national security concerns.
With over 170 million U.S. users, TikTok was on the brink of a nationwide shutdown. This marks Trump’s third extension since returning to office, signaling his reluctance to see the platform “go dark.” While no buyer has been finalized, the White House says the added time will help ensure a deal closes — and that American user data remains protected.
Despite previous attempts to ban TikTok during his first term and a Supreme Court ruling upholding the law, Trump now appears more measured, even suggesting China’s approval may ultimately greenlight the sale. TikTok remains operational for now, but the clock is once again ticking.
