Walmart is taking a bold step into AI-powered retail by partnering with OpenAI to let customers make purchases directly within ChatGPT. The collaboration will integrate Walmart’s product catalog with OpenAI’s Instant Checkout feature, allowing users to find and buy items conversationally without leaving the chat.
The move reflects Walmart’s goal to stay ahead of changing consumer habits as shoppers increasingly discover products through AI recommendations and digital assistants. CEO Doug McMillon said the company is embracing a “multi-media, personalized and contextual” shopping future designed to make online experiences more engaging and intuitive.
OpenAI’s Instant Checkout, launched in September, debuted with Etsy sellers and will soon expand to major retailers like Walmart, Glossier, and Skims. The partnership marks a new revenue stream for OpenAI and a major innovation for Walmart, which already operates its own AI shopping assistant, Sparky, within its app.
