Postal workers across Canada went on strike Thursday evening after the federal government announced sweeping changes to Canada Post. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) said the “future of the post office is on the line” following Ottawa’s decision to end door-to-door delivery expansion, close rural post offices deemed unnecessary, and relax non-urgent mail delivery standards.
Canada Post confirmed that no mail or parcels will be processed during the strike and that service disruptions will continue after work resumes. Customers are warned not to expect regular delivery times until well after the disruption ends. Some post offices will also remain closed throughout the strike.
While all regular mail services are suspended, both Canada Post and CUPW agreed that socio-economic cheques — including government financial assistance for seniors and vulnerable Canadians — will still be delivered. Shipments of live animals already in the network will also be completed, though no new shipments will be accepted.
