Waymo and Toyota Team Up to Build Self-Driving Cars for Everyday Drivers

Waymo is finally moving beyond robotaxis—teaming up with Toyota to develop self-driving tech for personal vehicles. The partnership, which also involves Toyota’s Woven division, marks Waymo’s first serious push to bring its “Waymo Driver” to consumer cars.

Instead of aiming for full autonomy on every street, the focus will be highway and major road driving—letting drivers relax on long trips while the car takes over. It’s not quite hands-off everywhere, but it’s a big step toward making self-driving features more accessible.

The rollout is still years away, but this move could seriously shake up the consumer EV space. Toyota gets Waymo’s tech, Waymo gets Toyota’s scale—and drivers may soon get a taste of real autonomy outside of ride-hailing apps.
