Turkey Residence Permits: What Types Are There and What to Choose

Learn about the types of residence permits in Turkey: short-term, family, work, student and others. How to choose the right one? Read our guide!

Turkey has a favorable climate, a high standard of living with affordable living costs. In addition, the process of obtaining a temporary residence permit in this country is quite simple and takes little time. Therefore, Turkey is rightly considered one of the most popular destinations for moving.

Depending on the goals, the candidate can request one or another Turkey residence permit and present the necessary documents. There are several main types of permits, which you can learn more about.

Short-term residence permit

This residence permit is the most popular and in demand among foreign citizens. One of the advantages of the document is that it is issued to applicants for up to 2 years.

The right to obtain a short-term residence permit is granted to those candidates who meet one of the following requirements:

  • own a residential or commercial property in the country;
  • plan to stay in Turkey for a long time without employment;
  • participate in research and educational programs;
  • are engaged in medical tourism.

Depending on the basis, applicants must provide the appropriate package of documents. For example, a certificate of ownership, proof of financial solvency, health insurance, etc.

Family

This residence permit is issued to those who are a family member of a Turkish citizen or have previously received a work or long-term residence permit. Spouses, minor children, and dependent parents can apply for the permit.

The advantage of a family residence permit is that its validity period is up to 3 years. In this case, the period of validity of the residence permit or citizenship of the applicant must be taken into account.

Student

This residence permit is designed specifically for foreign students. A mandatory requirement is admission to one of the accredited educational institutions in the country. The permit is issued for the entire period of study. To obtain the document, you must present documentary evidence of enrollment, insurance, and proof of financial independence.

Work

This type of residence permit is issued together with a work visa. The applicant must first obtain a special work permit. The Ministry of Labor has the relevant authority.

The validity period of the residence permit directly depends on the duration of the contract signed with the Turkish employer. Upon expiration of this period, the permit can be extended. To do this, you must provide a new contract.

Long-term

The corresponding residence permit is issued to foreigners who have legally lived in the country for at least 8 years, holding other residence permits. To obtain such a document, you cannot leave Türkiye for a long period; you must have a stable income and valid health insurance.

Humanitarian

Accordingly, such a residence permit can be obtained by certain categories of foreign applicants who confirm humanitarian reasons for staying in Turkey. Usually, these are persons who have become victims of conflicts, as well as refugees from other countries.

The validity period of a humanitarian residence permit is usually determined individually. The disadvantage of this document is that it significantly limits the rights and opportunities of a foreigner. For example, he cannot get a job. Therefore, humanitarian residence permits are not very popular today.

Residence permit for victims of human trafficking

Not everyone knows, but in Turkey, even this type of permit is provided for by law for foreign applicants. In this case, victims have the right to file a petition. The validity of the document depends on the period of the assigned rehabilitation in the territory of the state.

An important condition for maintaining and extending the validity of the document is compliance with the law and maintaining the grounds for staying in the country. You cannot get a job in Turkey with a student residence permit. To do this, you must obtain the appropriate type of permit by signing a contract with a Turkish employer.

Final conclusions

Regardless of the type of residence permit being issued, candidates are required to prepare an application and collect the necessary package of documents. To do this, you can familiarize yourself with all the rules and requirements yourself. Or seek help from qualified immigration lawyers. They will help prepare a dossier and will be able to accompany you at every stage of obtaining a residence permit in Turkey.
