The Highest-Grossing Video Games of All Time

Written by ,  at .

Gaming is more than just a pastime. In fact, many would agree it's more of a lifestyle. Some games are fun. Some games are legendary. And then there are the games that make so much money they could probably buy a small country! All jokes aside, let’s break down the highest-grossing titles of all time and try to figure out why people keep throwing money at them.

Top Highest-Grossing Video Games in History

Gaming has turned into a multi-billion dollar industry with some absolute juggernauts that have raked in more cash than most blockbuster movies. While game sales and revenue models have changed over the years, especially in the advent of the digital era, certain titles have stood the test of time. Curious to know what game has made the most money ever? Here's the ultimate list:

1. Minecraft

Everyone and their mom have played this game at least once — or, if they haven't, they must have at least heard of it. It even has an upcoming movie starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black. Talk about its cultural impact!

Mojang’s Minecraft seemingly became an overnight sensation since its release back in 2011. This blocky sandbox adventure has sold over 300 million copies and counting. That’s almost the entire population of the US! Let that sink in for a minute.

Without a doubt, Microsoft has transformed this little number into a never-ending revenue machine that refuses to slow down. The in-game marketplace is packed with skins, texture packs, and expansions, which keep the experience fresh and exciting. As a result, fans eagerly await each new update.

2. Grand Theft Auto V

If there’s one game that defines financial success in modern gaming days, it’s no other than GTA V. First launched in 2013, this title has shipped over 210 million copies and generated more than $8 billion in revenue. Yeah, you read that right — GTA V has made more money than most Hollywood movies combined.

Rockstar Games nailed it with an open-world experience so detailed and immersive that people are still playing it a decade later. And let’s not forget GTA Online, which continues to print money for them with microtransactions, new expansions, and an ever-growing economy where players buy virtual properties, vehicles, and upgrades.

3. Tetris

Now, this is an oldie — but a goodie indeed! It’s certainly not flashy, it doesn’t really have a battle pass, and yet it still remains one of the most-played and highest-selling games to ever exist. Isn't that cool?

The original Tetris came out in the mid-80s. However, it has seen multiple versions across just about every platform under the sun since its original release. While exact revenue numbers are tricky due to its many iterations, it has sold hundreds of millions of copies. Let's just say there’s something timeless about stacking blocks and clearing lines — it’s simple, addictive, and surprisingly satisfying.

4. Wii Sports

Ah, Wii Sports. Let's give a round of applause to the game responsible for countless living-room injuries — and some of the most fun you could have back in the day.

Bundled with the Nintendo Wii in 2006, Wii Sports sold nearly 83 million copies. It was the perfect showcase for motion controls and brought gaming to an audience that had never picked up a controller before. While it doesn’t rake in money through downloadable content (DLC) or microtransactions like modern titles, its sheer sales volume undoubtedly cements its place in gaming history.

5. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

Before Fortnite took over the world, this was the leading game in the battle royale genre. Introduced in 2017, this title has sold over 75 million copies and helped define a genre that now dominates online gaming. While newer games have taken the crown in terms of player count, PUBG was the first to prove that a battle royale game could be a massive commercial success.

Honorary Mentions

Not every top-grossing game relies on direct sales. Some of the most lucrative games of all time are actually free-to-play, earning billions through in-game purchases. The most popular titles include:

  • Fortnite: Epic Games’ battle royale sensation has pulled in around $26 billion in revenue.
  • Dungeon Fighter Online: You might not have heard of it if you’re outside of Asia, but this game has generated $22 billion in revenue.
  • League of Legends: This title has been a real cash cow since its release in 2009, with its revenue surpassing $20 billion.

Final Thoughts

Gaming has come a long way from its arcade roots, and today’s highest-grossing games prove that a great game isn’t just about graphics or hype. The titles above are living proof that the real secret sauce to long-term financial success in the industry is to keep players hooked for years.
