Meta Targets 5% of Workforce for Performance-Based Layoffs

Meta, the tech giant behind Facebook and Instagram, told employees Tuesday that it’s cutting about 5% of its workforce in a new wave of performance-related layoffs. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company aims to “raise the bar on performance,” focusing on replacing lower-rated workers with new hires in 2025. While Meta has typically offered underperformers a full year to improve, this move speeds up the process, signaling a more aggressive approach.

The announcement coincides with big policy changes at Meta, including an end to fact-checking and relaxed content moderation rules. These shifts come as leadership gears up for a new presidential administration and seeks to counter critics who say social platforms unfairly stifle certain viewpoints.

Some employees, especially those from diverse backgrounds, have expressed anxiety over how these layoffs might play out. Zuckerberg recently scrapped Meta’s diversity and inclusion programs, raising concerns about who could be most affected. Still, Meta insists the cuts are strictly performance-driven and promise “generous” severance packages for those who lose their roles.
