Herschel Segal, the Montreal retail legend behind both DavidsTea and Le Château, has died. The news was confirmed by DavidsTea in a statement released Saturday, saying Segal passed on Tuesday.
Segal was a major force in Canadian business. He launched Le Château back in the late '50s, turning it into a go-to fashion spot for generations of mall-goers before fast fashion giants like H&M and Zara arrived. Decades later, he co-founded DavidsTea, which quickly became a hit with its bright shops, quirky blends, and wellness-forward branding.
Even after stepping down from DavidsTea’s board in 2021, Segal’s family kept the brand close. His wife, Jane Silverstone, now chairs the board, and his daughter Sarah Segal leads as CEO and chief brand officer. “Herschel’s legacy lives on through DavidsTea,” Jane said, adding that the mission he started is far from over.
Segal wasn’t just a founder—he was a builder. And while both brands have seen ups and downs, his impact on Canadian retail is undeniable.
