This year’s Black Friday shattered online shopping records, with consumers spending an unprecedented $10.8 billion, according to Adobe Analytics. That’s a dramatic increase from $5 billion in 2017, fueled by a surge in mobile shopping, which accounted for 55% of all purchases. Thanksgiving Day also saw record-breaking online sales of $6.1 billion, setting the tone for a lucrative holiday shopping season.
Toys emerged as the top category, with sales soaring 622% compared to average days earlier in the fall. Popular items included Harry Potter LEGO sets, Disney Princess toys, Cookeez Makery oven playsets, and board games. Electronics, such as the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch OLED, were also high-demand items, alongside jewelry, appliances, and apparel. Beauty products, smartwatches, and espresso machines rounded out the list of "hot sellers."
Adobe predicts Cyber Week will generate $40.6 billion in online sales, with Cyber Monday expected to be the biggest shopping day, potentially bringing in $13.2 billion. While online shopping dominates, in-store activity remains robust, with mall visits surging 300% on Black Friday compared to early November. The rise of digital shopping, combined with enticing discounts, continues to reshape consumer habits during the holiday season.
