Get ready to revolutionize your iPhone experience like never before! With the upcoming release of iOS 18 this fall, Apple is bringing a wave of exciting changes that promise to enhance your connectivity, personalize your device, and make every moment unforgettable. From customizing your iPhone to staying effortlessly connected with loved ones, iOS 18 is set to redefine the way you interact with your device.

During Apple's recent WWDC keynote event, Software VP Craig Federighi unveiled a plethora of enhancements set to transform Apple's native apps and the operating system itself. While artificial intelligence took center stage, the presentation kicked off with a showcase of more traditional updates, setting the stage for an extraordinary leap forward in technology.

Customization

Apple has always prioritized aesthetics, and their latest update is no exception, offering a more customizable and visually appealing Home Screen experience. Now, you have the freedom to rearrange apps and widgets to your liking. Place them at the bottom for quicker access or to the side to complement your favourite wallpaper, or create a unique layout for each page of your Home Screen to best suit your needs.

The introduction of a new theme engine further enhances personalization by letting you apply a chosen colour across your app grid, creating a cohesive and visually appealing interface. You can tint them with any colour you prefer or let iOS suggest a hue that complements your wallpaper. In dark mode, app icons will adopt a darker tone, making it easier on the eyes. Additionally, you have the option to enlarge apps and widgets, making them more prominent and easier to use.

Evaluating Privacy

With iOS 18, Apple continues to prioritize user privacy by introducing two innovative ways to safeguard sensitive apps and their data. These features ensure that your personal information remains secure, even when others use your device.

Locked Apps

iOS 18 allows you to lock any app using Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. This means that before anyone can access the app, they must authenticate their identity. Additionally, information from these locked apps won't appear in other areas of the system, such as search results or notifications, preventing accidental exposure of sensitive information.

Hidden Apps

For even greater privacy, you can choose to hide apps entirely. Hidden apps are moved to a special hidden apps folder that is also locked. This feature ensures that these apps are completely out of sight and inaccessible until you unlock them.

More Control Over Your Controls

Apple has unveiled a major update to Control Center, making it more intuitive and customizable than ever. The redesigned Control Center now features new groups of controls that you can access seamlessly with a single, continuous swipe down on the Home Screen. This fluid interaction enhances your ability to find and use the most important features quickly.

One of the standout advancements is the ability to swipe between multiple pages of controls and toggles. This new feature ensures that all your essential tools are easily accessible. Additionally, for the first time, third-party apps can integrate directly with the Control Center, expanding the range of controls available to you.

iOS 18 also allows unprecedented customization on the lock screen. You can now replace the default camera and flashlight icons with any Control Center toggles of your choice. This flexibility means you can set up your lock screen with shortcuts that match your personal needs.

The new Controls gallery in iOS 18 offers a comprehensive view of all available controls, including new ones from your favourite apps. This gallery makes it easy to add more controls to your Control Center, enhancing its functionality. Furthermore, you can rearrange and resize these controls or even build custom groups, ensuring that your most-used tools are always just a swipe away. Lastly, the iPhone 15 Pro's Action button can now be used to access these new controls on the lock screen, adding another layer of convenience and efficiency to your iPhone experience.

Photo App Redesigned

The new Photos app introduces the biggest redesign ever, making it easier than ever to organize and find your photos quickly. With a sleek and intuitive interface, the app brings your memories right to your fingertips, allowing you to spend more time enjoying them and less time searching.

Photos automatically organize your library into helpful topics such as recent days, trips, people and pets. The new Pinned Collections feature gives you instant access to your most important collections and albums. Optimized to handle ever-growing libraries, the app includes face sorting and improves the automatic grouping of people and pets into collections accessible via the app’s new carousel view.

A new space for your favourite photos, the Carousel, can be accessed by swiping right from the grid. This feature highlights your best content in a stunning, poster-like view, displaying a fresh set of photos each day for a delightful surprise.

Making Messaging Easier

Apple's Messages app is about to become more expressive and versatile with several new features.

Now, you can enhance your conversations with rich text formatting options, including bold, italics, underline, and strikethrough. Additionally, playful, animated text effects can be applied to any letter, word, phrase, or emoji, many of which are automatically suggested as you type. These effects allow you to emphasize important news or simply add a fun touch to your messages, providing new ways to visually amplify your texts.

One of the standout features is the expanded capability of tapback responses. You can now use any emoji or sticker, including live stickers made from your photos, to express your reactions. The most frequently used emojis and stickers can be quickly accessed with a simple swipe, making it easier than ever to convey your feelings.

For those moments when you're off the grid, Apple's Messages app on iPhone 14 and later models now supports messaging via satellite. This feature ensures you stay connected with friends and family over iMessage or SMS, even without Wi-Fi or cellular service. You can send and receive messages, emojis, and tapbacks, all of which are end-to-end encrypted for your security.

One of the most anticipated additions is the ability to schedule messages with the new Send Later option. Whether you want to send a message at a specific time or ensure you don't forget important communication, this feature offers convenience and flexibility.

Lastly, Apple has confirmed that Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging is coming to Messages with iOS 18. RCS brings richer media capabilities, as well as delivery and read receipts for those who don’t use iMessage, ensuring a seamless messaging experience for everyone.

E-Mail

Apple's built-in Mail software has been significantly upgraded to improve email management. The first is improved categorization, and this version includes new categories such as transactions for receipts and order confirmations, promotions for marketing and sales messages, and updates for newsletters and general communications. The primary category is very handy because it contains your most important emails, such as those from people you know and time-sensitive messages. This allows you to focus on what is genuinely important rather than being distracted by less important communications.

Furthermore, the app now organizes message snippets, allowing you to swiftly read through emails such as receipts, marketing messages, and newsletters based on the sender. This streamlined view allows you to manage your inbox more efficiently and quickly access the information you need.
